Janet Smith in a new article argues the CDF is wrong to use the doctrine of material cooperation to assess the permissibility of the new vaccines. Rather she says they should be deemed ill-gotten goods.

Is she right? Does traditional Catholic morality say that benefiting from a sin is to be assessed differently then other forms of participation?

1. My first thought (as a non-specialist) is that use of ill-gotten goods is a species/case within cooperation with evil.

2. Thankfully, the conclusion of the same anyway. The vaccines are permissible and even obligatory in some situations.

Exactly right. By protecting ourselves, we protect others.

"Dec. 25 (UPI) -- In the annual Christmas Day message at the Vatican on Friday, Pope Francis urged world leaders to make available COVID-19 vaccines to all -- especially the most needy."

She delineates a difference between cooperation, which occurs before or along with the evil act, and appropriation, which happens after the act.

She may be right. I'll have to think about it.

Is that a part of the definition of cooperation?
