There are four Sundays of Advent in the sacramentary of Gregory the Great (who died in 604).... So... 4 ;) It is a little more complicated than that because pre Christmas (Ephiphany) seasons of penance developed in more than one place and they didn't all follow the exact same patterns.


In 490 the Bishop of tours wrote that Advent was from November 11 until Christmas.
The Council of Saragossa (380, Spain) provides evidence of a three week Advent Celebration

In the old rite there are only 3 Sundays of Advent this year because the fourth Sunday is suppressed in favor of the Vigil of Christmas.
