Hey all,

What would be a good way to explain the use of Holy Water to a non-believer without making it sound like something superstitious?
It might sound like a good-luck charm or something to some people.

Thanks.

Confusing and complicated answer to a simple question.

Holy water is a sacramental. It is a symbolic reminder of repentance of sin, protection from evil, and baptism.

There is something wrong with your link the picture at the heading of the article covers a large portion of the article.
It is complicating things a bit.

It might be a mobile vs. desktop issue.

While I feel most of that is simple to explain without raising questions of superstition I guess my question was more on what you said there. Protection from evil. We hear saints for example say things like holy water protects us from evil spirits etc.

I guess from someone else's perspective, they might say something like "oh my dream catcher is like that" or "I burn this herb to keep bad spirits away" etc.

How can we explain this aspect of holy water without people thinking its is just another one of the many 'good luck charms' out there that claim to do the same thing?

I'm not sure you are going to find a one ir two sentence answer. I imagine the people you are referring to might find sacraments themselves, before even explaining what sacramentals are, to be 'good luck charms'. But i think you should explain in a few paragraphs what the church teaches (the creed, for example being a good starting place), then what sacraments are, then sacramentals.

In some ways, the request seems to be similar to one asking why we believe the volume if a cylinder can be definitively calaculated without understanding what area, 3 dimensions, or even numbers are.
