Hey everyone,

Question about the Glory Be prayer. It goes as follows:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

My question is, what exactly does the last part mean?
Like what does it mean to say "As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end"?

What does that refer to? World without end? I read somewhere it was a mistranslation and actually referred to the Trinity's eternity?

Thanks.

The Latin is literally "into ages of ages."

That's that New Heaven and New Earth stuff...epic beyond all belief, as I was told.

It's a mistranslation, and it's doctrinally wrong. No where does the Catholic Church teach the world will not end.

To paraphrase a former president, it depends on what "world" is. If you mean our physical planet or universe, I agree that the Church does not teach that they will not end. But could "world" mean "all God has created", including the spiritual world?

No offense, but that sounds like a Baptist arguing that Jesus drank grape juice, not wine.

Clearly, the ORIGINAL Latin does not refer to a world -- any world -- without end.

Which is exactly what Fr. Kenobi said above. :fyi:

But that's my point. Saying that maybe it refers to a DIFFERENT world isn't tenable, since the original didn't refer to ANY world.

In the breviary the second part goes like this...

"As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen."

That's it. It's like...God is among us and already making Heaven on Earth, or something. When He comes back in His fully glorified form, I'm sure we'll fully understand what all this is about.
