I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know how to go about hiring a reputable latin translator and what the standard rates are so I don't get swindled?

I know it has been *months* since you've asked. But depending on the length of text, you can find folk to help. I'd be happy to take a stab at a few pages (10 or so), but not much more. For me, not being quite the expert, it would take me some time.

But if you are looking for more than that, there are freelancers. Something like guru or freelancer (.com) might have someone. A quick search on guru shows a few. They are about $20 to $30/hr, which seems reasonable to me. To test them out, I would suggest sending them an excerpt and have them translate it. A few things to note is what you expect out of the translation. Do you want a literal translation? More stylistic? This is where translation becomes more art than science. Those of us who have studied Latin to any degree will tell you that the mechanics are pretty basic (once you learn them all), but transforming the text into something readable and "well-written" requires far more experience.
