This happened in Germany as well.
My memory is very fussy, but I think I read it happening in a few places in the US too.

In a Solemn Mass it's sung by a deacon (or a priest acting as one) - the priest may or may not be reading the Gospel inaudibly at the altar at the same time (depending on the rubrics he's following).

That's right, I completely forgot. It's been a long long time since I've been to Solemn Mass.
