You might have enjoyed Rod Bennett's Four Witnesses: The Early Church in Her Own Words which Ignatius Press published in 2002. In October 2021, Ignatius Press published Bennett's Four More Witnesses in the Early Church: Further Testimony from Christians Before Constantine which extends the theme.

I've only read the earlier work, but hope to get around to the sequel soon.

EDIT (26 March): I just got the sequel in digital format so I can read it with my Kindle Reader app on my iPhone. I'm a few pages in and learning about Hermas.
