I get a newsletter from IFS (The Institute for Family Studies) and it contained this article on Janet Yellen (the former Chair of the Board of the US Federal Reserve and likely nominee for Secretary of the US Treasury) and her husband George Akerlof (co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001), and the work they did studying contraception and abortion. (I think there was a UC Berkeley Professor, Michael Katz, who co-authored a similar paper with them.) The IFS article has a duplicate link, a misspelling of Akerlof's name (where was the editor?) and I suspect another article referenced in the article is unlinked but should be.

Here is an article linked from the IFS article I linked above.

Anyway, to me, these findings are fascinating. Elsewhere these authors identified as supporters of legal abortion and I think that makes their findings even more remarkable.

Thanks for the suggested reading -- it looks interesting.

Divorce does the same thing.

Divorce impoverishes women and children? Yes, and men, too. I've occasionally spotted "MGTOW" (for "men going their own way") the last year or three and divorce has something to do with it, though I'm unsure what MGTOW entails precisely. And "INCEL" (for "involuntary celibate") has popped up at about the same time, at least in my experience. I think inceldom has more to do with lots of women out-earning men and disqualifying these under-earning men as marriage candidates.

But it impoverishes women and children disproportionately.

Perhaps.

I recommend reading The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko. This is an in depth study of millionaires and it reveals most millionaires are self-made (we're talking about people who made them money by scrimping, saving and investing.) One characteristic of these people is they rarely get divorced. Divorce throws everyone off track economically.

I was told in marriage class (at seminary) that there are studies documenting it. It's not that some men don't suffer very negative consequences from divorce, but the averages show that women and children suffer distinctly greater economic losses.

The irony is that the greater number of divorces are initiated by women.

Perfectly true.

And if you're on a forum where some woman asks for help with her marriage, divorced women will chime in and project on her the very behaviors and attitudes that destroyed their own marriages.
