Is there some kine of backup option for the Mac other than Time Machine, which I have come to despise in the two weeks I have been trying to use it?

From the looks of it, Time Machine requires that an external hard drive be connected to the computer 24/7/365, and from the looks of it basically backs up everything in real time...the back up started two weeks ago, and it STILL won't allow me to disconnect the hard drive without giving me a message about how the back up has failed and needs to be restarted.

This is ridiculous, if this was a Cray supercomputer at the Department of Defense that housed nuclear launch codes, it might be necessary to have a backup of every single second of usage from now until the heat death of the universe, but I don't need that....all I need is something that will take a couple of hours to make a back up, once or MAYBE twice a week, (and even then twice a week is excessive if you ask me) and then I can disconnect the hard drive and forget about it for a week.....

Time Machine is an irritating pain in the ass and I don't want to use it...

Options?

While I wish Time Machine were more configurable, the problem with the drive being tied up is probably a Spotlight issue. You need to tell it to stop indexing the external drive. It's in the Spotlight preferences somewhere.

I suppose it deprends on how much you need backed up, but there are a few free online back ups, usually up to 5 gigs. I have two, one covers my documents and some articles I got from a closed network, the other covers some other folders, with my music and videos backed up on an external harddrive (I don't add to those often)

Preferences App, Spotlight, Privacy, drag the icon for the external drive from Finder into the exclude list.
