Liberals are characterized by an unquenchable desire to run other people's lives. That's what makes them so hard to defeat -- we conservatives don't have such a powerful obsession.

The liberals are always better organized and more united, not just in the church but in politics. Democrats always march in lockstep, whereas Republicans are always divided, in a constant state of civil war. Democrats always vote for the nominee, whoever it is, while Republicans boycott the election if the candidate is considered 'too moderate', 6 million fewer Republicans voted in 2008 compared to 2004 because the base didn't like McCain, and Romney did even worse, losing another 6 million votes. The same thing happens in the church, the progressives know exactly what they want and are united and well-organized, while the conservative opposition is always fractured and fighting amongst themselves.

That is why, in both cases, conservatives almost always lose. Of course, there is also the "outsider" mentality that there is a certain subset of conservatives that frankly don't even want to win because they consider it is somehow more honorable to lose. The myth of the "lost cause" and all that.

And all this is why we can't have nice things and our civilization is doomed.

Been my basic view of things since I graduated from high school. Save that my term for the enemy was "totalitarian absolutists".

And their totalitarian tendency is more pronounced now than it was then, which is another conservatives always lose. The totalitarian statists care about nothing except winning, and they are not above breaking every rule in the book to do it, lie, steal, cheat, whatever it takes, as long as the result is more power in their hands, they will not hesitate to do it. Conservatives, we play by the Marquis of Queensbury Rules, but you can't win that way against an opponent who cheats. It's like going into a boxing ring expecting a fair fight only to have your opponent beat you with a baseball bat.

What makes them so difficult to defeat is that they don't have a life outside of politics, the acquisition of power is the only thing that they see, hear, read, or even think about, they respond to everything by asking themselves 'how can I use this to gain more power'? That is how they were able to weaponize COVID so quickly, they had the entire country shut down and had a master plan to use it to win the election so fast that by the time we realized what was happening, it was already too late to stop it. How can people who actually have lives and who only start thinking about politics a couple of weeks before the election possibly compete with people who think about politics 24/7/365 and care about absolutely nothing else?

Odd, that it is a liberal Pope that the Germans rebel against, after tolerating John Paul II and Benedict XVI for close to 40 years.

Because they believe, and not unreasonably, that ultimately Francis will do nothing to stop them.
