Not to be scrupulous, but are their guidelines regarding wearing a scapular medal instead of the cloth one? I recently enrolled, and have been wearing a blessed cloth scapular, but wow, is it itchy.

There are quite a few "scapular medals" available from Catholic stores, but does it matter which I choose? And is the medal form a "cop-out"?

Examples of the variety:

Only one or two of these ads identify the scapular in question. I know the Carmelites say their scapular cannot be replaced with a medal.

"What are the conditions requisite for gaining the Our Lady’s promise of the Brown Scapular?

1.To observe exactly what has been prescribed regarding material, color, and shape of the Scapular, that is it must be 100% brown wool in a rectangular shape.
2.To be enrolled in the Scapular by a priest.
3.To wear it continually."

Many people are allergic to wool, and for other reasons it is not possible to wear a cloth scapular.
The above directives are from both branches of the Order, and were given in the year 2000.

I thought the general consensus was, the wool is preferred, but if that’s not an option then one may wear the medal.

For the record - I was/am allergic to wool and used to get a small rash/itch where my scapular rested against my chest…plus I run a few days a week so the sweat aggravated it. But, that eventually went away over time.

Perhaps over time it might get better for you?

Does the Brown scapular have to be wool?

It did at one time, it no longer does. Few Carmelite Religious use pure wool for their habits, including their scapulars, anymore because of the expense and the impracticality.

The above question and answer is in the directives of the site I provided.

Thank you for the link. This is what they said about the medal:
"The Scapular medal can be worn in place of the cloth scapular for good reason but is not the preferred form precisely because the sacramental link the visible link with the cloth panels of the Carmelite habit has been lost."

And, apparently, the images sewn on to the wool cloth are later innovations. I wonder if it might not be more comfortable if I removed them.

I have the same problem with tags on clothes. Do I break out in an allergic rash from tags (or the scapular)? No, but they irritate my skin and drive me nuts.

You can remove the images if you want to....and if the scapular irritates your skin and drives you nuts you can use the medal.

The only quirk about the medal is that it must be blessed. You can replace your cloth scapular, once enrolled, without its getting blessed.

If it's "just" itchy, well. ..imagine wearing a hair shirt like the French King and St. Louis and many other saints did. It's called mortification and if it's just itchy it's a pretty small mortification compared to, say, being a stylite. If we're talking full-blown allergic reaction of course that's a different matter. And wool scapulars are always itchy until they're broken in.

And I stink at mortifications, so I'm not playing any holier than thou card, I promise you. Just trying to help.
