I’ve been invited to a Bastille Day party next month. The host is a naturalized American citizen of French origin; we share an interest in local politics.

I don’t want to arrive empty-handed, so I was thinking I’d bring as a gift a book on some alliance between the French and the Americans. It could be a historical account or a biographical one (the Marquis de Lafayette or Alexis de Tocqueville in America, or Benjamin Franklin in Paris, for example). Anything, really. It doesn’t even need to be currently in print; I’m not beyond getting a good-quality book from Ex Libris or a similar website. I’m just looking for any suggestions. I haven’t even set a budget yet, although I don’t see me spending over $50.

So, whaddya got?

I only know anti-French books, such as 'Our Oldest Enemy: A History of America's Disastrous Relationship with France" by John J Miller

I haven't read this yet, but I used to be obsessed with the French Foreign Legion.

That's a tricky one for me. Could I attend a Bastille Day party? It's never actually come up for me, I must admit. But I suspect the answer would be no.

I love a good French Foreign Legion movie...Beau Geste (especially the 1939 version), Secondhand Lions, The Mummy....

Meanwhile, this book seems very fitting. I wish it were available in hardcover, but "ne choisit pas qui emprunte." It's definitely at the top of my ideas list right now.

For a Franco-American story, how about one (or all three...) of these relatively recent books about the creation of the Statue of Liberty?

Enlightening the World: The Creation of the Statue of Liberty by Yasmin Sabina Khan (2010)
The Statue of Liberty: A Transatlantic Story by Edward Berenson (2012)
Liberty's Torch: The Great Adventure to Build the Statue of Liberty by Elizabeth Mitchell (2014)

How about Tale of Two Cities?

I would never celebrate murder and treason. It is a day that celebrates a Freemasonic victory over the Catholic Church. And, bloody murder. The do I that here in New Orleans. I almost threw up when I saw it. Ut literally made me feel sick to see that day celebrated.

I am amazed. We agree. Your suggestions are top notch.

The Statue of Liberty - that's perfect! Thanks, Custos :salut:

I ordered the first two books in hardcover - that took me right to my $50 limit. I'll let you know how mon ami (et sa épouse) likes it.
