For general information: The Encyclopedia of Philosophy, ed. Paul Edwards The Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy For super-brief info: The Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy The Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy For good books about Stoicism, you can try: Stoic Philosophy by J. M. Rist (Cambridge, 1969) The Stoics 2nd ed. by F. H. Sandbach (Hackett Pub., 1989) For primary texts: Hellenistic Philosophy: Introductory Readings, 2nd ed., trans. Brad Inwood and L. P. Gerson (Hackett Pub., 1998) The Hellenistic Philosophers, 2 vols., trans. A. A. Long and D. N. Sedley (Cambridge, 1987) Just what I have on my shelf. David |

If you want a quick treatment, then you could read the first volume of Copleston's history of phil. As for larger works, The Cambridge Companion to the Stoics is about all I can think of. |
