Because "He had to die to descend", and where He went?

Pondering the question,
Thanking all in anvance for what this could mean.

Peace always,
Stephen

"He descended into Hell, and on the third day he arose again."

But "Hell" in those days merely meant "the abode of the dead."

I remember being told as a child in CCD that "He descended into Hell" meant that he went where the souls of the just from the Old Testament were waiting for their salvation, and Jesus went there to take them with Him.

It is confusing to children to use the word "hell" which means different things, and they are not instructed properly.

Correct. As the parable of the rich man and Lazerus, the souls of the just were not in torment. They were in "the bosom of Abraham." In the Middle Ages, Jesus' action in bringing the souls of the just to Heaven was called "the harrowing of Hell."
