I tell my son's father "I am not happy with you. this is not what I want for my life or for a relationship" and he says "lower your expectations"
I find that so insulting. my expectations could not be any lower. I dont think it is unrealistic to want your friends to have some kind of basic understanding of what you mean when you speak. if that person doesn't get you, then you just don't click and you're not really friends in a certain sense. I think its just basic common sense that if you date someone and you find that its not working out for you, you say so and then you separate. I dont think that's an unreasonable or unrealistic expectation.

Cannot remember who first said it, but "when someone tells you who they are, believe them". This man has told you he is not going to change who he is. Believe him. It is in no way unrealistic to want to be dating a person who wants to drag you down to their level.

You cannot change another human being, period. That's why you do not vow to change or be changed by your spouse. Instead you accept them "for better or for worse."

Make yourself a better person and maybe others will respond.
