No, you do not have to be Catholic to pray the Rosary.

Here is a site where you can send for a free Rosary; and you can ask a priest to bless it for you.

http://www.familyrosary.org/TheRosary/R ... aries.aspx

There is a lot of other information on that site also.

Ask any questions you may have about the Rosary.

May our Lord Jesus Christ and our Blessed Mother be with you on your spiritual journey!

Oh thank you! Bless you always!

I was raised Catholic and now in my 50's. About a year ago I started praying the rosary. I just can't memorize the apostles creed or the Hail Mary Queen that ends the rosary. I do the 150 rosary usually twice a day, going to and home from work. So I can't read them so I just don't say them. I make the sign of the cross, say an our father, 3 hail mary's and a glory be. Then 10 hail mary's followed by a Fatima prayer and so on till I complete the 150. I close with a glory be. When I pray the rosary I am either asking or thanking our lady for something. A lot of the time I just ask for help at becoming a better person. I have always heard the is no wrong way in praying the rosary, it's the intention and what's in your heart that matters. Your feedback is appreciated.

The way I pray the Rosary depends on where I am. At home, I pray it while sitting or reclining, or I pray it while I clean.

At church, I pray the Rosary either sitting or kneeling.

I am new here, and am meeting with someone at our local catholic church on sunday to talk about classes. But I still can't quite grasp the rosary, what are the "mysteries" you speak of? :)

Mysteries of the Rosary
The Church has used three sets of mysteries for many centuries. In 2002 Pope John Paul II proposed a fourth set of mysteries—the Mysteries of Light, or Luminous Mysteries. According to his suggestion, the four sets of mysteries might be prayed on the following days: the Joyful Mysteries on Monday and Saturday, the Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesday and Friday, the Glorious Mysteries on Wednesday and Sunday, and the Luminous Mysteries on Thursday.

The Joyful Mysteries
The Annunciation
Mary learns that she has been chosen to be the mother of Jesus.
The Visitation
Mary visits Elizabeth, who tells her that she will always be remembered.
The Nativity
Jesus is born in a stable in Bethlehem.
The Presentation
Mary and Joseph take the infant Jesus to the Temple to present him to God.
The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
Jesus is found in the Temple discussing his faith with the teachers.

The Mysteries of Light
The Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan
God proclaims that Jesus is his beloved Son.
The Wedding Feast at Cana
At Mary’s request, Jesus performs his first miracle.
The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God
Jesus calls all to conversion and service to the Kingdom.
The Transfiguration of Jesus
Jesus is revealed in glory to Peter, James, and John.
The Institution of the Eucharist
Jesus offers his Body and Blood at the Last Supper.

The Sorrowful Mysteries
The Agony in the Garden
Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before he dies.
The Scourging at the Pillar
Jesus is lashed with whips.
The Crowning With Thorns
Jesus is mocked and crowned with thorns.
The Carrying of the Cross
Jesus carries the cross that will be used to crucify him.
The Crucifixion
Jesus is nailed to the cross and dies.

The Glorious Mysteries
The Resurrection
God the Father raises Jesus from the dead.
The Ascension
Jesus returns to his Father in heaven.
The Coming of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit comes to bring new life to the disciples.
The Assumption of Mary
At the end of her life on earth, Mary is taken body and soul into heaven.
The Coronation of Mary
Mary is crowned as Queen of Heaven and Earth.

As you can see from the list of Mysteries that faithfulservant kindly provided, the Mysteries are significant events related to Mary's and Jesus' lives.

Typically, we meditate on one of these mysteries while praying each decade (usually, a decade= one "Our Father" and ten "Hail Mary" prayers, and may include another prayer or two as well). As we pray, we might think about how to apply Jesus' teachings or example in our own life, or what the event may reveal to us about Him, or any of a number of good things. It's a little like listening to relatives reminisce about a family member, or reminiscing about them yourself. It's a way of remembering and of getting to know a little more about Someone you love.

What I find cool is that even the mysteries (and prayers) that seem to focus on Mary are ultimately about Jesus. :cloud9:

I've only prayed the Rosary for about a year. A lot of it was a result of promises made when joining the society (con fraternity?) of the Brown Scapular, which also includes the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But, I'm retired and have plenty of time to do this.

Praying the Rosary and the Office are very good at making me feel 'centered on Christ.' As you say, the Rosary is about His life. Of course Mary is very relevant in that, and considering how she submitted to His will in all is a fine example for us all.

Another book I like to use is The Rosary With Pope Francis, as it has a note/scripture for every bead of the decades.

God Bless!

I reflect on the Mystery until a certain part of it calls me.

I meditated on that and how it related to me personally in my own relationship with Christ.

There have been other insights of that nature.

I visualize the scene - and the movies I have seen about the life of Christ have helped in that visualization. They have made it more present rather than remote.

I also will sometimes return to my Rosary book, so that I do not become lazy in my meditation.

But I don't pray the Rosary the same way every single time. Sometimes it is the prayers themselves that are in the forefront, sometimes the Mysteries, sometimes the Mysteries in relation to my own life.

Sometimes, it is an issue in my own life that takes the forefront - something that I need to work on, something I need to take to God.

God speaks to us through the Rosary, and I think that in a myriad of ways He will do so.

"For instance it was contemplating the Finding in the Temple that I realized here were two people closest to Jesus - and yet they managed to lose sight of Him."

It wasn't that Mary and Joseph lost sight of Jesus per se, it was an allegory, a foreshadow of Jesus' three year mission of spreading the gospel. It was also a foreshadow of Jesus, having died and rising after three days, found in the Resurrection.

Luke 2:44-49 And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey, and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance. And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers. And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father's business?

The fifteen decade Rosary might work for some people, but may not for those who pray the Liturgy of the Hours.

Or for people who have a job and a family and thus don't have 90-120 minutes to set aside every day to pray a full 15-decade Rosary.

family rosaries are wonderful :cloud9: i'm sure the Blessed Mother would smile greatly when a family prays Her Holy Rosary together :cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9: not sure why your rosary takes 90-120 minutes....i'm guessing about 70 minutes tops

I have a few questions about praying the Rosary, which come down to 'How does one do it?' I've prayed it quite a number of times now, but I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly. I want to know the following:

Posture. Do you usually pray kneeling, sitting, or standing? Today I prayed on my bike, because the weather was beautiful and no one was around. (I didn't have the beads, but I learnt counting before kindergarten. ::):) Would that be permissible? How about during daily activities, such as cooking dinner?

Focus. Should you pray the Rosary with full attention to the words you are saying, meditating on the Mysteries in between, or is the repeated Ave Maria intended as a sort of 'background music' to keep you thinking about the Mysteries for a certain time?

Meditation. How do you usually meditate? Do you try to visualise the scenes, or do you think about their significance, or do you try to relate to them personally?

I'll have a go at it:

Posture - whatever posture is required for you to focus on what you're doing with as few distractions as possible

Focus - Yes on all counts IMO. Seriously, it's what works for an individual, not prescribed by Church Teaching or the like.

Meditation - at the mysteries, I envision the scene, and I continue to do so, with some thought as to the effects on the Blessed Virgin while continuing.
That's to say, I essentially recite Hail Mary's as a background music for my own actual mental prayers with ample focus on the Scriptures for Mysteries.

You ever want a curveball, try it in Latin :) On second thought, unless you're the academic type, don't!

Blessings,

Of course, it's now a twenty decade rosary, with the Luminous Mysteries.
