Bishop Sheen says that when Christ/God looks at the soul that is not in a state of grace, He sees nothing of His own image and says to that soul "Depart from me..." Does this mean that until a person is saved through baptism, there is absoutely none of the image of God in that person? That sounds like what His Grace is saying.

Some theologians differentiate between the image and the likeness of God. I don't know if +Sheen was one.

A line of thought (and I'm speculating somewhat here) could go like this:

We are told that Jesus is the image of the invisible God. We are created in the image of the image, so to speak (I didn't come up with that). But a person without sanctifying grace doesn't image Christ.

As I say, speculation, and worth every penny you paid for it and not a cent more.

The Cappadocians and other Fathers said that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God. We are all divine icons (greek for image).

What is lost through sin is the likeness (homoousios in greek), not the image.
