I'm reading Dominion by Tom Holland and it covers quite a few towering intellects in the history of the Church.

Tertullian has been mentioned as very bright.
Origen even brighter.
He mentions the breadth of Abelard's knowledge (and arrogance) but goes on to say that "Not even Abelard was so immodest as to claim a stature equivalent to that of Origen or Augustine".
So... there's also Augustine.
Aquinas...

It's not all too serious of a question because of the nuance involved in ever actually answering it.... but, who do you think is the brightest mortal mind in the history of the Church?

Origen and Tertullian were too smart for their own good.

I understand that this is just supposed to be a fun, silly thread, but the quality you're looking for is not intelligence, the best theologians are not necessarily the ones, nor does the battle necessarily go to the one who makes the nest arguments. Arguably the Arians actually made the best arguments.

it's not at all clear what Origen's actual views were he was a victim of a massive campaign of character assassination, it will never be possible to separate the truth from the lies

I used to think only Aquinas and no one else came close, until I read more and more of Augustine‘s writings. I’d certainly say both now.

But they failed to see the consequences of their position -- if Jesus is not truly the Son of God, He is not unique, and another even greater "Jesus" can appear at any time.

And did appear about 600 years later.

That's not a logical consequence of Ariamism at all otherwise Muslims would be waiting for another prophet
