I don't have the right to call myself a Catholic yet, although I want to be, but I was taught how to make the cross many years ago. The woman who taught me how to do this was in her early 20's at the time and she came up in, and maybe it could be said she was born into, the Catholic church.

How I was taught to make the cross:

1. All done using your right hand, touch the center of your forehead

2. Touch the middle of your chest just under your throat

3. Touch your left shoulder

4. Touch your right shoulder

5. Once again, touch the middle of your chest just under your throat.

Is this wrong?

Please know I am not criticizing anyone but I will say that different people do this differently. I will say that I have seen people do it that way but I have seen people do it different ways.

I converted to Catholicism in Texas, and learned to make the Sign of the Cross as the TexMex do, which is similar to the your description with exceptions being Steps 1 and 5

1. The SOTC is made with the thumb of the right hand pressed against the tips of the right index and middle finger, signifying the Holy Trinity - the other two fingers are tucked away into the palm of the right hand

5. The right hand is curled into a loose fist with the thumb on top, brought up to the mouth, and the thumb is kissed (I do it between the joint and the bed of my thumbnail)

Catholics generally don't make the return gesture to the middle of the chest.

I tend to touch closer down near the belly button. This actually makes the Sign of the Cross take something more like the shape of a cross.

Forehead
Middle of the chest
Left shoulder
Right shoulder
(optional: making a cross with the thumb and pointer finger, kiss that as if it was a cross. This is a tradition, that while I wasn't raised to do it, having seen others do it, I adopted it.)

You might not be doing it 'right' but ultimately it doesn't matter, you won't be judged in how you make the sign of the cross. Ever since I came down with carpal tunnel, I can no longer put my fingers in the correct position so technically I've been doing it wrong for more than 10 years

Pikers. You should watch how the Byzantine Catholics make the sign of the cross. Full bow, extend the arm and make the same cross, only right to left.
