I suspect this has been brought up before, but given that the search engine isn't working and it seems to be in vogue at the moment, I just wanted to note that I'm not comfortable at all with the Eucharist playing any role in politics.

As to the denial, I've always understood that a priest can exercise this right, so I'm trying to understand what is the Vatican's beef?

Politics are only involved insofar as sin and the public advocacy of it are political. Was St. Ambrose being political when he denied the Sacrament to Theodosius for the Massacre of Thessalonica?

Was the issue at hand used as a political tool?

To that end, I would say it is political. Certainly, that shouldn't sway the Church either way; but it is a reality of it.

No. The issue was the murder of about 7,000 people.

Suppose Ambrose knew a man had committed murder -- simply out of anger, not politics. Would he not be justified -- perhaps even required -- to withhold communion from him?

One bishop, commenting on this, notes that we aren't the ones making it political. It's the people who want to use the label of "devout Catholic" as a political asset.

Certain factions in the US say everything is political.

This is purposeful and designed.

If everything is political, then churches cannot speak about sin (i.e., abortion, homosexual unions and etc.) without losing their tax-exempt status.

This is a devious, well-designed and long-term plan to silence Christians.

Brilliant really, which is why I know it’s diabolical in origin.
