After months of torture and bribery by lowdenclear I have finally joined. I have the great misfortune of sharing a house/cat with her and another girl here in Belfast, so felt that I had to join to rectify the impression she has hitherto imparted. Don't feel ashamed. You're not the first to be duped. She had me fooled for months. Mostly because she kept flying off to America, or else I was visiting my mother in Norway, so we barely saw each other the first few months.

Anyway, I am an exiled Norwegian :siggy and a convert :cloud9: of two and a half years. Now I'm stuck and I don't know what to write, as my life is really not that exciting!!! Well, according to Lowdenclear, things should be looking up now that I've joined DCF. :)

Hello! Any friend of lowdenclear is okay by me!

I am a cradle Catholic, married for 10.5 years to my husband Mark (a convert of 7.5 years). We have three kids: Kelly (7), Steven (3), and Brooke (15 months). I am a homeschooling mom. We live in central Oklahoma, USA (we're that pointing state above Texas, :) )

:wave Welcome! Norwegian Blue, what a pleasure it is to have to join us! Too bad you had to go through all that torture and bribery. Hopefully, you'll find all of us at DCF worth all the trouble! :D

Hi Norwegianblue! Welcome to the board.

I am a cradle Catholic, married to my husband, Bob, for almost 28 years. We have only 2 children, Diane (24) and David (21) and are expecting our first grandchild in about a month.

Play a little bit of classical guitar, but haven't really practiced much the last few years, so wouldn't go as far as calling myself a guitarist. Enjoy it when I do decide to pick it up the odd time, though. What about yourself?

No, we've decided to infiltrate the North this time. And, as you can tell from my introduction, we are now joining the Church instead of sacking it. Much better this way. :D To be fair to my ancestors, they also came to the same conclusion after a while.

Hello and welcome on board, Norwegianblue :)

I am a 36-year-old Finn received to the Catholic Church in May 1997. We live in Vantaa with my wife who is known on this board as Mini-76. We got married in May 2005.

Jeg snakker desværre ikke norsk men forstår ganske myet ;)

Oh, and Lowdenclear mentioned a roommate that has something to do with Maryvale Institute... would that be you? :)

Thanks for your welcome.

Du kan ihvertfall mer norsk enn jeg kan finsk.

No, the Maryvale housemate is the third girl in the house.

I'm originally from a tiny hamlet in the Southwest of Norway, in one of the wider fjords. How big is the Church in Finland? I think Norway has the smallest Catholic population in terms of percentage of the population of all European countries (and we only have 4.5 million citizens). When I'm at home I have to travel 60 kilometers to get to mass. :( Hope you're more fortunate in Vantaa. It's great here in Belfast. Where we live we have 9-10 chapels within easy reach, and a few more not too far away, with a range of masses starting at 7am, with the last one at 7.30pm weekdays, and 7pm Sundays. There are also a couple of chapels close by with perpetual adoration. It's great! :D

The Church in Finland is, as far as I know, even smaller than in Norway. We are about 9,000 in a population of 5,200,000. I, too, used to live in a place where the nearest church was 145 km (90 miles) away. Back then I was happy to attend Mass twice a month in the home of a family who lived just 80 km (50 m) away.

But yes, Vantaa is a relatively good place for a Catholic. In the neighbouring Helsinki (10 m away) we have two Catholic parishes, and there is going to be a new church built just half a mile from where we live in a few years' time. In my present parish we have 4-5 Sunday Masses, and once a month the priest comes to a nearby Orthodox Church to celebrate Mass.

Yes, I must have been misinformed. Just checked the numbers on the Norwegian Catholic website, and in 2002 there were a little over 44.000 registered Catholics, or just under 1 per cent of population, so clearly more than in Finland. People close to or in Oslo certainly enjoy better conditions for the practicing of their faith than other places. Not too bad in Bergen either. The Church is growing, though, mainly, I think, by baptism and immigration, but there is also a certain amount of conversion.

We are growing here, too. So far I have done my best by converting and bringing in my DW from Poland where they have plenty of Catholics anyway ;) Seriously, in the beginning of 80's there were only 2,500 Catholics in Finland, so we really are growing.

How did you end up in Belfast, anyway?

Greetings from my DW :)
