1. Somebody here was reading Nichols' book on Benedict XVI. Was it any good?

2. What's the best volume out there on Maximus the Confessor?

3. Best book focusing on the work of Leo the Great?

1. Yes and no. Content wise, it is great--the only book in english that critically discusses Ratzinger's theological influence and approach. It is more than a biography. On the other end, I like Nichols, but I find his writing style very difficult at times to understand, not because of the content, but because of the way he communicates. Nevertheless, I do like Nichols and recommend his work.

2. Well, again, Nichols book on Maximus is excellent, but very expensive: about $70. A less expensive, yet very good volume, is that of Balthasar: Cosmic Liturgy, the Universe According to Maxiums the Confessor. Andrew Louth's "Maximus the Confessor" is also good. For primary works of Maximus, a good introduction would be the Classics of Western Spiritualityu, "Maximus the Confessor, Slected Writings". Related work would be the small volume of Anthony Meredith: The Cappadocians.

3. Nothing to recommend. Sorry.

Justin

I can only respond to #2.

The best one I think it "Maximus the Confessor" by Hans Urs Von Balthasar. This is a translation of Maximus and I think its organized quite well.
