 Post subject: A Quetion from a non-catholic
PostPosted: Sat Apr 16, 2005 10:49 pm
Ok first off, i would love to be catholic, but my wife is holding me back at this time. I am sure through Gods plan, i will be Catholic. Ok, the quetion that i have is this. Why is the Pope called the Pope? What does it mean? why is he not just called the head cardinal?
Just wanted to know.
Thanks
Matthew

The word Pope comes from the Greek "Papa", meaning "Father". He is not a cardinal at all -- the cardinals were historically what we English speakers would call the "key" clergy of Rome and its province, but what in Latin were called (in a different door-opening figure of speech) the "hinge" clergy (cardinal comes from "cardo", meaning a hinge.) The Pope, meanwhile, was Rome's bishop, and the metropolitan (that is, the head bishop) of the province.

And if instead of Pope you want to call him the "Bishop of Rome", you can -- as the character says in the play "A Man for all Seasons", it in no way changes his authority.

Thank you so much custos. I have been thinking about this for some time know, and know that this would be a great place to ask.
Thanks
Matt :D

Matthew,
Have you read Home Sweet Rome by Scott and Kimberly Hahn? It is an easy read, explains a lot about the faith, and details the conversion of Scott, then later, Kimberly. Don't know how far along you are in your journey, but that book might help you out, knowing that you are not the only one in this situation.

The Pope can also be referred to as the Pontiff.

The realization came to me the other day, though, that in the not too distant future it will have been TWENTY YEARS since we were all worked up about the Y2K bug and how it was going to be The End Of The World As We Know It. Turned out to be a big fat nothingburger for most people (although I'm sure it still caused some headaches for some IT professionals).

No one who actually knew anything about software thought that it would be anywhere as significant as that. But there was a legitimate concern in some industries, in particular, banking. If the banking industry hadn't fixed the problem, which they did, years in advance, then on January 1, 2000, millions of people would have had no access to their money, possibly forever.

Not simply 'the pontiff', he can be referred to as the 'Roman Pontiff' or the 'Supreme Pontiff'.

I heard that song on SiriusXM 80s on 8 yesterday. (Or was it the day before? It was definitely this week.)
