Critics don't necessarily represent the audience, critics and fans don't always judge films by the sane criteria. I've read some of the negative reviews, and the things the critics hated are exactly the things that fans like. Surprise cameos by characters you weren't expecting to see? Direct call backs to classic scenes? Dialogue directly referencing obscure things only fans ever noticed? Critics hate all these things, but fans love them.
I remember back in 2005 when they made a Doom movie (based on the first person shooter), starring Karl Urban and Dwayne Johnson (billed as the Rock). A critic here in Norway decided to write two reviews (or rather a double review). He wrote one review for fans of the game, giving the movie 5/6 (we usually use dice rolls in Norway) and one for the average movie goer, using the normal criteria for films reviews, giving the movie 1 or 2/6.

Well, that's where I disagree. Hayden Christensen was basing his performance on how Mark Hamill played Luke. He was just as whiny. People just tend to forget exactly how whiny he was. "I was going to Toshi Station to pick up some power converters…"

Yeah, Luke the young farm kid was indeed pretty whiny. But Anakin the young jedi wasn't complaining about not being able to pick up power converters in town. He was talking about massacring a whole village of sand people. Stuff like that.

Both the young and older Anakin were portrayed very poorly. Anyone can watch the old movies and see there's zero comparison with Luke who was fleshed out far more completely, not, "I'm gonna flip out and start killing people." Lame.

Look, anyone can snap in a crisis. It's not like he went and killed younglings in cold blood or something.

I don't know if the problem is so much with Hayden Christensen's portrayal as it was with the story and the dialogue. But then the same could be said of many movies.

That's actually what I mean to say here--it's both. The performance is very poor, but the script was so deplorable (and I imagine the direction was deplorable, too) that the actor is surely not the fundamental problem.

What crisis? "They're out to get me or people I know! Kill!" That's called paranoid schizophrenia and calls for the Jedis in white suits to haul him away.

There ya go. But it's just kill, kill, kill. Lame. Not some Good Side/Dark Side struggle. Just a killing spree, which looks dynamic but when lacking enough motivation, a sloppy call on the part of the writer or writers. A little build-up, he struggles... but no.

I think there are scenes in Revenge of the Sith that show that Christensen is not a bad actor. But then he's saddled with awful dialogue even there.

It's been at 86% from 5,000 reviews up until now at over 69,000 reviews. Not even a 1% change with nearly 65k reviews added? That is pretty bizarre.

Also, I read all the spoilers and watched several spoiler-filled reviews. It's exactly the dumpster fire I though it would be.

I watched it and give it 7/10.

Not as good as the first 3 made but better than the next 3 made.

Of course I don't know what you expected it to be, but I went in expecting to be disappointed and was pleasantly surprised. It was an enjoyable movie and I'd see it again, unlike the piece of hot garbage that preceded it.

I wasn't expecting much. And actually, I don't expect what to see with movies, just what not to see. I can tell you what I don't like to see: Sidious coming back is idiotic and last moment pandering that harm's Anakin's redemption, ridiculous force powers, and Rey taking the Skywalker name at the end. Most damage had already been done in the previous two movies with destroying the characters of Luke and Han, the Mary Sueness of Rey, and rehashing tons of past elements.

I am sure if it were a "what-if" thing not to be taken seriously then it would be somewhat fun.

In other words you want to hate it you looked for reasons to hate it and therefore confirmed the desire you originally had. This isn't exactly the most persuasive argument. whenever you look for reasons to hate something you're always going to find what you're looking for.

Sure, whatever makes you feel better about Star Wars being ruined.

The argument was in the part you left out.
