I'm just finishing up Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian. I'm enjoying it much because of the narrative style, very much including the ever present humour, and also of course the character developments and observations. I know there is a dramatization of one of the Master and Commander books. Does anyone know if it is any good? I mean, considering the fact that I don't particularly care to seek it out simply to watch a bunch of naval battles.

I have the movie on DVD. It's good. Can't vouch for its faithfulness to the books since I have not read them.

According to the film's Wikipedia entry, though, the film uses plot elements from multiple books in the M & C series. It says the plot mainly comes from The Far Side Of The World. (The full title of the film is Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World)

Edit: Here is the Wikipedia entry, see especially under the "Development" section on how the books were adapted into a screenplay.

Fighting sail books are one of my hobbies. I have all the O'Brians.

I found the movie to be excellent, as composite, as Zoom said, of those two titles, mostly of FAR SIDE. And Crowe is the absolute perfect realization of my image of Jack Aubrey. Bettany is a fine Maturin, but a little too tall, IMO.

Good movie.

IMHO, best movie I've seen of fighting sail. And that genre is of only minor interest to me -- but I enjoyed the movie a good bit.

I've finished Post Captain and am now trying to stay away from the 'Buy now with 1-click' button on amazon for HMS Surprise. It's hard. I think there should be some kind of rule against enabling people to buy books with one click. Even if they're kindle versions. :(

I have noticed how really, really good my Kindle is at selling things to me.
