Cardinal Francis George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago and President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has announced that the full text of the English-language translation of the Roman Missal, Third Edition, has been issued for the dioceses of the United States of America.

The text was approved by the Vatican, and the approval was accompanied by a June 23 letter from Cardinal Llovera Antonio Cañizares, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. The Congregation also provided guidelines for publication.

In addition, on July 24, the Vatican gave approval for several adaptations, including additional prayers for the Penitential Act at Mass and the Renewal of Baptismal Promises on Easter Sunday. Also approved are texts of prayers for feasts specific to the United States such as Thanksgiving, Independence Day and the observances of feasts for saints such as Damien of Molokai, Katharine Drexel, and Elizabeth Ann Seton. The Vatican also approved the Mass for Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life, which can be celebrated on January 22.

Cardinal George announced receipt of the documents in an August 20 letter to the U.S. Bishops and issued a decree of proclamation that states that “The use of the third edition of the Roman Missal enters into use in the dioceses of the United States of America as of the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011. From that date forward, no other edition of the Roman Missal may be used in the dioceses of the United States of America.”

I was just reading that "Lord, I am not worthy to receive you," which will change to "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof." And "Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again" will no longer be used, and there are changes to the wording of the Nicene and Apostles' creeds.

I wonder when new Missals will be published?

I wonder how many parishes are going to use this as an opportunity to eschew missals altogether? I know several parishes, mostly of a more traditional bent, who instead use Liturgy Sheets that change every Sunday. It uses more paper, but it's a good way to avoid the other things they put in missals (banal music, questionable prayers and/or explanatory notes, etc.).

It just dawned on me that you might be talking about altar missals, kage. Oh, well. I guess my musing still stands.

I suspect that personal editions of the Missal will be available by this Christmas (and would make a fine gift ;-)

The third edition of the Roman Missal in Latin can be used anytime, even in USA, right?

Will this do away with holding hands during the Our Father?

It makes no changes in that respect.

Well, that's too bad. I wish there was a footnote that said not to go adding things like that.

It is beyond my depth to really understand what all this portends. I know that it is a better translation and that by itself is a good thing. How is this going to impact the typical modern mass? ISTM that while the changes may be significant in a way that overall there really isn't going to be a tremendous amount of difference.

except for the grumblings of all those who wish to leave well enough alone...or don't want to be bothered with learning anything new

we actually had our director of worship, in his homily this weekend, let folks know what was going to be happening and why ...with the specifics given about some of the changes in the creed

Go here (NAR). Under "Sample Texts" you can find side-by-side comparisons of what has changed.

Why would it be the Apostles' Creed and not the Nicene Creed? AFAIK there's no general permission to replace the Nicene Creed with the Apostles'.

IIRC in the 2003 Missale that substitution can be made even outside of liturgies for "children"

The inclusive language crowd is going to like the verse about the Holy Spirit in the Nicene Creed. In my former parish, they've been saying "who" instead of "he" for years. Of course they changed a bunch other things too (all by themselves - self-appointed popes they are), and sometimes said "she" instead of "who" but they'll like the "who"s. Now all the switching from "we" to "I" - THAT they will not like.

I can't wait to see how they introduce these. After all, most church-goers don't read the missal. I can't imagine people suddenly using it. Not to mention the fact that my parish has the big hardcover Worship books that will be really expensive to replace.
