wonder how long it will take to filter down to the parish level? (or if it will at all... guess it will depend on the individual bishop )

Lay ministers may not cleanse Communion vessels, Pope Benedict says

Just a clarification on the matter. The article says, "extraordinary ministers of holy Communion will no longer be permitted to assist in the purification of the sacred vessels at Masses in the United States." There is a distiction in purification and cleansing. The priest purifies the vessels with water after Communion, others can cleanse the vessels after that.

except for some priests that have nothing to do with the purification of the vessels

at our church, once Father has finished his communion line, he goes back to his chair, waits until all of the ciboria have passed him being brought to the tabernacle , then sits down... the Mass ends with the final prayer and blessing and he processes out with the deacon, the seminarian, the mc, the lectors, and the altar servers

at no time does he do anything to purify the vessels (either ciboria or chalices) ... x number of our EMHCs are assigned to do that :verymad:

At our parish the lay ministers take the remaining Blood and chalices to the Sacristy, drink it and then purify them.

I hope this letter filters down quickly.

At my parish, the priest does it all. After Communion, the lay ministers bring the vessels back to the altar, where the priest purifys them.

Ah, now, see, this is one thing I don't have to worry about. No EMHC, only the one species we receive (he receives both, and cleanses the chalice after that. He takes care of everything else before he seats himself...the patten, etc.

It sure is nice...

Was this indult originally requested by American Bishops?

Was there something published in 2002 as the rationale for the granting of the indult?

Are there many Parishes that use intinction, and can that method be done by EMHCs?

such negativism sg... or is it just realistic expectation :?

lbf... i think i'm correct in stating only a priest may distribute communion by intinction

I sent my priest the link to that article.
I'm an EMHC at my church.
I certainly don't object.
*shrug*
I just asked him what he knows.
Just out of curiosity, not objection.

I checked a document for extraordinary Eucharistic ministers. I found the following:

Quote:
#59. The sacred vessels are to be cleansed by the priest, the deacon, or the extraordinary minister.

Why did a translator decide on "extraordinary minister" instead of "acolyte"? Maybe, it is a difficult word. Both old GIRM (237-239) and new GIRM (278-280) use the word "ACOLYTE".

Is there a difference between "cleansing" and "purifying"?

As a sacristan, I have a habit of rinsing purificators with water into the sacrarium of the sacristy after the Mass.

A deacon can also distribute communion by intinction. An acolyte can hold the chalice, and I think there should be a communion plate, too.

GIRM 287 explains the communion by intinction the best:

287. If Communion from the chalice is carried out by intinction, each communicant, hodling a communion-plate under the chin, approaches the priest who holds a vessel with the sacred particles, a minister standing at his side and holding the chalice. The priest takes a host, dips it partly into the chalice and, showing it, says, Corpus et Sanguis Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ). The communicant responds, Amen, receives the Sacrament in the mouth from the priest, and then withdraws.
