I am writing a paper on the fact that Peter was the first pope and that popes succeeded him afterwards. My "Cathoic" history teacher at university thinks that the papacy was a 7th century invention. However, in showing the biblical typolgy, I came across an issue. Where is the biblical evidence that the Prime Minister in the old testament was the "man in charge" when the King was away? Thank you. Even a theologian saying this would be a good enough quote.

My first thought was Samuel, but that was not really a PM/King relationship.

Maybe I'm reading into this too much, but I mean specifically in relation to the office of Prime minister stepping up to "fill the shoes" of the King when the King was gone

What about in Genesis, where Joseph was in charge of Pharaoh's house? Also in Genesis, Adam was "in charge" of Creation.

The New Testament should be sufficient, I would think.

Why do you mean by "Prime Minister"? Are you referring to the High Priest or something else?

edit:

I did a little googling on this and came across an article that talks about the Davidic Kingdom having a "vicar" or a "prime minister." I don't think that's accurate or that there's any historical evidence that such a position really existed. I'd suggest, especially if you're dealing with a history prof, you offer historical evidence that one even existed in the first place before you make a typological argument. :-/
