Hi. I am in process of getting through an "Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, NT, 2nd Catholic Edition." LOVE IT!

I frequent catholiccompany dot com, and see they have a Navarre Bible, and it appears to have the Vulgate text as well. I am just now beginning to learn Latin on my own, via a resource posted here: "A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin ~ John F. Collins, " and eventually the Vulgate will indeed be of interest to me...

Do any of you have/use this Navarre Bible? Would it be of much use to me before I learn the Latin????

Any input appreciated!

Its notes are nothing special, and the English text is just the Catholic Edition of the RSV.

Buy this if you're looking for a Latin Bible. You can also find bilingual Vulgate and Douay-Rheims bibles, but you probably want a Latin-only one.

If you want a Latin commentary along the lines of the Navarre or Ignatius bibles, google "glossa ordinaria" and you should find something.

I would not necessarily rush to buy the Stuttgart Vulgate. It is a critical edition.

I would ask myself "what sort of Latin bible do I want?" The critical edition is good if you want some German protestant reconstruction of what Jerome's revision may have looked like, with some notes about alternate manuscript traditions.

The Clementine and the Nova Vulgatae are the Church approved ones. The latter is in the Navarre bible. I personally think the Clementine has greater value as a representative of the vulgate tradition in the Church

I would also not recommend the Glossa Ordinaria

Latin text in Navarre Bible comes from Nova Vulgata.

The only problem is that typos in Nova Vulgata haven't been corrected for years.
