putat and cogitat...Is there any essential difference?

Perhaps the question should be:

Between the two, which one is more commonly used in Latin for the word "think"?

puto: hink, believe, suppose, hold; reckon, estimate, value; clear up, settle
cogito: think; consider, reflect on, ponder; imagine, picture; intend, look forward to;

So it would seem that "cogitare" goes for more extensive thinking, pondering, reflecting, where as "putare" is more what I'm thinking about at the moment.

I never even go to Yahoo answers. It is normally a cesspool of stupidity, wrong answers, and sometimes illegal advice. Glad they got something right.

Though it ruins the joke I had lined up. Whenever I hear puto I do think of saying "I reckon"

Vir, puta Socrates, in vias currit.... I just have to translate that as "reckon Socrates"
