I think the more appropriate translation is:

Man is dust.
Fame is smoke.
Ashes is the end.

No, I think Father did a better job. As given it is a set of Q & A, and that is lost in your version

Now I have a question about your web site. The About the Author area has this: "And a would be pedant on every subject I can attempt to grasp."

Am I the only one confused? Is a word missing after "a"?

Not if you assume a dash between 'would' and 'be'.

Ah. Now it makes perfect sense. I kept trying to read it as if "a" were a Shakespearean "he."
