Rome, Feb. 4, 2008 (CWNews.com) - On a weekend visit to the major seminary of Rome, Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) encouraged the students to prepare for ministry as "messengers of the Gosepl."

Presiding at Vespers at the seminary on the feast of its patron, Our Lady of Trust, the Holy Father said that the students should learn to rely on the Virgin Mary's intercession. "Just as 'the Son was born of woman,'" he told them, "the fact that you are children of God means you have her as mother."

Pope Benedict addressed a substantial portion of his remarks to the parents of the seminarians, noting that "the vocation of children in some way also becomes the vocation of the parents." He recognized that they are probably surprised by their sons' aspirations, and might have had other plans. But he told them that their children are now embarked on "the most interesting of adventures and the most necessary for the world."

Life in the seminary, the Pope continued, should be marked by two things: an atmosphere of quiet, conducive to prayer, and a feeling of community, preparing the young men for pastoral work "in a single body, an ordo of priests who, with the bishop, watch over the Christian community."

lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi
