I have heard no, and read yes. So what is it?

Those who say yes are simply redefining the word "vocation" and they use it to mean "living out what God wants you to do". In that sense, everyone in the world has a vocation. But traditionally, the word vocation has a much more restricted sense. So the answer to the question depends on how one defines the word vocation. Personally, I am in favor of returning to the more traditional meaning of the word vocation, so I would answer no to the question.

For most people, the single life is a cross that is difficult to bear. They will be conformed to the will of God by accepting this from His hands.

I would have to think that it is not. You haven't dedicated yourself to anyone else. In marriage you have dedicated yourself to a spouse and to children. In the priesthood, to God and your flock. I just don't think it really fits.

I agree. I don't think being single is a vocation either. St. Paul writes that the state of virginity is a vocation though. He probably means virginity in the Priesthood and religious life.
