Each Advent/Philip's Fast I start a list of songs for the season that are people's favorite. One of my favorites remains Wesley's "Lo, He Comes with Clouds Descending"

Lo! He comes with clouds descending,
Once for favored sinners slain;
Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of His train:
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
God appears on earth to reign.

Every eye shall now behold Him
Robed in dreadful majesty;
Those who set at naught and sold Him,
Pierced and nailed Him to the tree,
Deeply wailing, deeply wailing, deeply wailing,
Shall the true Messiah see.

Every island, sea, and mountain,
Heav’n and earth, shall flee away;
All who hate Him must, confounded,
Hear the trump proclaim the day:
Come to judgment! Come to judgment! Come to judgment!
Come to judgment! Come away!

Now redemption, long expected,
See in solemn pomp appear;
All His saints, by man rejected,
Now shall meet Him in the air:
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
See the day of God appear!

Answer Thine own bride and Spirit,
Hasten, Lord, the general doom!
The new Heav’n and earth t’inherit,
Take Thy pining exiles home:
All creation, all creation, all creation,
Travails! groans! and bids Thee come!

The dear tokens of His passion
Still His dazzling body bears;
Cause of endless exultation
To His ransomed worshippers;
With what rapture, with what rapture, with what rapture
Gaze we on those glorious scars!

Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee,
High on Thine eternal throne;
Savior, take the power and glory,
Claim the kingdom for Thine own;
O come quickly! O come quickly! O come quickly!
Everlasting God, come down!

To the tune of Bryn Calfaria http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/l/e/lenthron.htm

What are some of your favorites.

BTW Philip's Fast is what you call Advent but it begins on November 15 and includes fasting from meat and dairy M, W, F until December 25.

I also love that hymn -- but the best tune to use with it is HELMSLEY.

I have always loved the line "Those dear tokens of His Passion/Still His dazzling Body bears" -- an important truth about the glorified Resurrected body of our Lord.

By the way, does everyone know about the reverse Latin acrostic found in the "O" Antiphons?

I posted this last year, and nobody knew, so maybe this year someone will. When did the West drop the Nativity Fast? Related question, do the Eastern Rite parishes still observe the Fast? (Sounds like it from this post, but not sure).

Have only the faintest idea what you might be referring to. Could you please elaborate? :)

The Antiphons sung at Vespers during the evenings of the last days of Advent are known as the "O" Antiphons. Distributed by day, they are as follows:

Dec 17: O Sapientia (O Wisdom)
Dec 18: O Adonai (O Lord of Israel)
Dec 19: O Radix (O Root of Jesse)
Dec 20: O Clavis (O Key of David)
Dec 21: O Oriens (O Dayspring)
Dec 22: O Rex (O King of the Nations)
Dec 23: O Emmanuel (O Emmanuel, God-with-us)

Thus, on December 23 -- and note that you cannot read it until the 23rd -- you have finished a sequence that, when the initial letters are read backwards, says EROCRAS.

EROCRAS? Yes: break that into two words and you have Ero cras , which means "I will be [there] tomorrow". (That "cras" is the same word one finds in "procrastinate", which comes from pro cras tenere, "to hold for tomorrow.") The "tomorrow" of the evening of December 23 is the evening of December 24 - and that night is the Vigil Mass for Christmas, at which we celebrate the arrival of Christ!

That is great! Thank you. I new they were from vespers, but had never heard of the reverse acrostic before.

I've just this year discovered "Rorate Caeli," but can anyone tell me when it is "supposed" to be sung???
