Post subject:  Children receiving a blessing during Communion

In our parish, and most of the parishes in the diocese, the children during Communion always go up with us to get a blessing. It's actually something that my little ones get excited about. I have heard recently from a friend that a priest she knows who is a liturgical specialist (sorry I don't know the proper title), said that it's not proper for them to go up for a blessing. Is that the case?

If it's acceptable for adults to do it, I don't see what the problem is for kids to do it.

On a side note, when an adult is holding an infant .. or if the child can't be left alone in the pew and has to walk up with the parent... then I've seen the child/infant get a blessing from the priest (that is to say, they got a blessing even though they may not have been up front for that express purpose).
I've seen this at the novus ordo as well as at TLMs (FSSP and SSPX).

That usually happens at our parish as well.

Theo and I will usually have a child or two in tow, and Fr. or the Deacon will give them a blessing.

I haven't seen that with adults though, only children accompaing their parents, but as long as the minister is Ordained, I don't see a problem per se.

The practice is redundant because there's a general blessing before the Mass ended.

Cardinal Arinze talked about this on an EWTN interview a couple years ago....he stated it wasn't really proper for someone to go up during Communion for a blessing, for the reason stated above.

Jesus Himself said, "Let the children come", I see no proble with it! If it instills the reality of the Eucharist, I would certainly allow it!
