How many Communion lines should there be when the Holy Eucharist is distributed?

I have seen as few as one and as many as a dozen, depending on the size of the nave, and the number of parishioners in attendance. I'm sure some of the massive cathedrals have even more EMHC's, especially on the major feast days when even the C&E Catholics are in attendance.

I realize that doesn't answer your question of how many lines should there be. I'll let someone else cast that first stone. :nooo:

As many as the venue needs. There's no way to give a more precise answer.

I think we can all agree that under no circumstances should there ever be more than 876,624,334,565 communion lines, that is the absolute limit on communion lines that it allowed.

And the number of the counting shall be 876,624,334,565.

876,624,334,566 thou shalt not count, nor 876,624,334,564 unless thou then proceed to 876,624,334,565.

.876,624,334,567 is right out.

The biggest Mass I have been to is a Papal Mass in the parklands with 200,000 people.

There were about 1,000 communion lines.

The number of lines for Communion should be the same as the number of priests and deacons available for Its distribution (within limits). In most churches two is fine - maybe more if the church is 'cruciform'.

But then maybe talking about "lines" is silly - people should just come up and kneel at the altar rail.

Masses with hundreds of thousands of people just should not even exist - or if they do, Holy Communion should not be distributed to all in attendance.

And how exactly do you intend to prevent people from coming up for communion? Armed guards and a requirement that anyone who wants to do up to provide proof in the form of a baptismal certificate? Closed communion cannot really be enforced except by encouraging people not to come up for communion if they don't meet the requirements.

it was his suggestion that Holy Communion should not be distributed at all in that circumstance...NOT that it be limited to a few... at least that was my understanding of what he said

1) Masses of that size should not even happen
or
2) if they do, do not distribute Holy Communion..

perhaps he will return and clarify what he said

I think it is fine for it to be limited to a few but that probably wouldn't work in this day and age. But it would be better if such Masses weren't celebrated in the first place.
