Can a lay woman make up her own novena to petition a specific saint or is it strictly a form of prayer that comes from higher up the chain of command?

Most novenas arrive via popular devotion. If you're going to want to print it up and spread it around, you probably should get approval from your bishop (because some devotions are just plain weird--not that yours would be, but it happens). But if it's just a private thing for you and for friends, go ahead.

It's strictly for me, a novena to Pope John Paul II, nothing I plan to pass around. I found a few lay people have put together, but was hoping that something more "official" had come out since his canonization.

Thanks for the info, Obi-Wan. It's good to know that a novena is still a novena even without a special stamp of approval from the church.

My take is that personal prayer, in almost any form, for any duration, is a good thing.
