So I went to the 5 p.m. Mass at St. John's today, and the priest (a young guy!) celebrated the Mass on the high altar, "ad orientem". It was beautiful. :cloud9:

... and then my friend Ron pulled me aside after Mass, saying he thought the priest was wrong to do that, because the Mass was primarily in English. He was apparently under the impression that the Mass is required to be celebrated facing the people if it's in the vernacular. :huh

I basically told Ron I thought he was mistaken, that the Church never required Mass to be celebrated facing the people, for any reason; only permitted it.

Who's right?

The problem with liturgical abuse is that it forces everyone to become a liturgical expert, and then legitimate and even preferred options are then perceived as abuses.

Basically, people are almost forced to acquire a kind of liturgical expertise that they didn't have to a few generations ago. Then they think they know more than they do, and are quick to spot liturgical "abuses" that aren't actual abuses.
