Are there rules about what altar servers are supposed to / may not wear? And in particular, is there anything that forbids female servers wearing the surplice and cassock?

At my old parish near Austin, female servers wear the same as the males: surplice and cassock.

At the parish I attend now south of San Antonio, I only see male servers, but that's just because the parish is so tiny, not because there's any rule. The jeans and sneakers that would have kept an altar server out of the sacristy at my old parish is standard attire. Even Father wears an old pair of sneakers under his alb. But again, it's not a commentary on anything. It's just how poor this community and this parish are.

Girls should not wear the cassock-surplice for the same reason boys shouldn't wear a sari.

#339 is sufficiently vague to allow darn near anything.

Who considers mens clothing "appropriate and dignified" for women?

It was worn by men only for centuries.

Or it's altar serving clothing, which women didn't wear because they weren't allowed to serve. Now they are, so they can wear the normal clothing for that.

I'm not actually arguing for having altar girls wear them--it's just not easy to show why they shouldn't, given that they are allowed to serve at all.

In a variant of the Roman rite (Carthusian?), nuns could read the Epistle. What did they wear?

So cassock is not the "altar clothing".

Ok then. I can think of many other reasons, but they can be dismissed quite easily. :surrender

Probably already been asked but what are the rules guiding when altar servers wear a red cassock vs. black?

Where does this state the girls cannot wear the surplice and cassock?

To me it states the opposite: As alter servers, girls "may wear the alb or other suitable vesture or other appropriate and dignified clothing."

Just to be clear, I don't particularily like female altar servers, as being an altar server have traditionally been one of the 'stepping stones' towards the prietshood.

We switch after confirmation. It seems odd to wear red before instead of after, but black is the adult color for classics generally speaking.
