This morning right before the High Mass, the priest went down to the altar rail with one of the altar boys to meet a woman kneeling with what appeared like a sponsor. Their dialogue was quiet until the priest start talking about revoking the pentalty of excommunication if she incurred it. Then he started reading something in Latin and anointed her with oil. After a couple minutes, it was over and the priest shook the lady and her sponsor's hand. I really had no idea what happenned.

In the homily, the priest mentioned that this young lady was received into full communion with the Catholic Church and he administered the sacrament of confirmation to her and that she would receive her first Holy Communion today. That made sense to me. The question is, what is the purpose of the revocation of a possible excommunication during the rite of reception?

Presumably for heresy or apostasy, ad cautelam.

It's part of the rite of absolution as well:

Quote:
Dominus noster Jesus Christus te absolvat; et ego auctoritate ipsius te absolvo ab omni vinculo excommunicationis et interdicti in quantum possum et tu indiges. Deinde, ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

Erm...excuse me but at times I believe in the past I have thought Donatist things out of anger. Am I technically excommunicated?!

No. It would require formal adherence. Anger also mitigates any penalty.
