Why? Is there a reason why they changed a tradition without explaining it?
I am asking as a person who isn't that good at Liturgy.

The change in orientation was pushed because of “active participation” and a faulty understanding of liturgical history.

There were several decades of the liturgical movement before the 1960s which had a stream of thought/misunderstanding that the early Church had versus populum in the liturgy. The other issue* they were trying to deal with was the laity’s conscience and active participation with the liturgy itself.

The thought went: “Well, we need to help people participate more. If the priest faces the people, they can see what is happening on the altar and better participate. This was also feature in the early church, so it must have value.”

The option of versus populum soon became the most used orientation because of the obsession of “active participation.” IMO, the use of vernacular also helped solidify the use of versus populum.

*Some say this was an actual issue, some disagree – and if it was an issue, it’s debatable over how big an issue it really was

It was not changed officially.

The Novus Ordo Missae still presumes, at least in the Latin rubrics, that the priest should turn to face the people at certain points (i.e. it does not presume versus populuun)

And here, you're beginning to stumble into a deep, deep wound for the faithful. As you look out into the Church today there are many, many things which have been changed, vandalized, or removed without explaining to the laity, and without any good reason. (Like... our entire Theology, Architecture, Sacred Music, Parish communities, the list doth go on...)
