Hi all,

Is Thaddeus an appropriate Baptismal name? I would like to name my boy after St. Jude Thaddeus, but wife thinks Jude is not unique enough, so we call him Thaddeus instead. It's one thing that he goes by Thaddeus, but it's a different matter if it is actually used as a Baptismal name, so is Thaddeus appropriate as a Baptismal name?

That depends on what you mean by "appropriate". I say use whatever is closest to your heart.

A baptism is also commonly referred to as 'the christening', the moment when you are officially given a name, your baptismal name should be the exact same as your regular name. I've never heard of a separate 'baptismal name' which is not the same as your regular name.

It's not unheard-of, for example when the person to be baptized has a name that is not Christian.

Thaddeus is a nice choice.
Should not a boy's first and middle name be taken from the names of Saints and/or from the Bible?

traditionally, i think that's the case, but... modern times are modern times.

my daughters first name is actually a family member's (maternal side) last name.... which just happens also to be a male saint's name..

her middle name is related to the Blessed Virgin.

In any case, Thaddeus is certainly a saint name.
and a baptismal name is ... well, i've never heard of a baptismal name ever NOT being a saint name.

closer to a "saint name" than 'Scott' or 'Jacquelyn' or 'Shantay' or 'Hayden' or 'Travis' or 'Bubba'

Maria/Marie is used as a male baptismal name.
