My love of books is faithful to (or obsessed with) the printed word, on paper.

But, that being said, I have made use of a variety of spoken word books and other stuff, as a necessity, when driving.

They are not my choice.

As much as I loathe it, I tend, reluctantly and with pinched nose, to agree.

I too have recordings of readings of books. I find that, when listening, as opposed to reading, it is easier to become diverted. Reading requires active mental and physical engagement; listening is more passive.

With age, I find I read more and listen less. Could have to do with my hearing.

I'll place my lack of hearing against yours, any day. Did you hear what I said?

But I found uses for audio input. Driving, as noted, waiting in doctors' offices or while wife shops (a small mp3 player in my pocket), and, when having read myself to sleep with the printed word, I continue into dream land with the same mp3 player. Works wonders.

I will read a book while treating myself to lunch. sitting in the park etc. Otherwise audio has really been my thing. Love my audible subscription.

Love my books. All 30 thousand (approx) of them. It's been an affair for the ages.

In his case I think "love" is some where between eros and pragma, with a bit of philautia thrown in. One must have a strong sense of storge to deal with him.

Requires storage, too.

That's what warehouses were invented for. Or municipal libraries. In your case.

Because of the love, between me and she, I possess two rented commercial storage units, climate controlled, about the size of a small garage, each, for the storage of the stuff the love I am blessed with has permitted me to accumulate.

Of course that works both ways. She got as many titles for Christmas presents as I did, this year.

Audiobooks have dramatically increased the number of books I can read, I now read nearly 100 books a year, most of them audiobooks, before I joined Audible, I was lucky if I could 20 books a year. Audiobooks allow you to fill up all the hours you would otherwise be doing nothing with reading, I can get through a 1500 page book in a little more than a week, listening sometimes for as long as 8 to 10 hours a day.

I'm surprised at your dearth of storage space. I had assumed you rented the Spruce Goose hanger when you were nearby there. For just the essential volumes.

Might have worked, but I moved.

The dearth of storage space isn't in the rented areas, one of which is fairly empty. I rented that one to use as work space, trying to organize the hundreds of book boxes from the other, full space better. The dearth is in the attic/garage/ storage shed at home. Not to mention the house, in which movement within and between rooms, to the extent that is possible, is dangerous.

I try to get an hour a day in. Took me most of last summer to get through the Reformation by Will Durant. it was like 50 hours. highly recommended.

I know what you mean. For many years I had a plan to build a library addition to the house. That has faded, slain by reality and a sense of familial responsibility.

Shelving was never going to be possible for all of them, even had I built the thing, but likely it would have put 10+ thousand before my eyes and within easy reach. With the existing shelves/bookcases in the house, as built by my book gathering father, I would have been content. Mostly.

Bought two more books today, anyway. I started this around age 10, that is, 63 years ago. They do add up. And the quarterly library sale is Friday night.

I like audio books but only on cassette tape and compact disc. I don't like audio books on digital download.
