In all my 86 years, and except as an altar server, I have never lit a candle in church because I always thought -mistakenly, no doubt - that people lit candles instead of praying. Can someone 'enlighten' me?

We are used to light votive candles such as at Lourdes and Fátima as well in our parishes.

EWTN explains this:

I frequently light candles. Then I pray. They go hand in hand ... a symbolic ritual which takes my mind to a place of prayer.

I always considered that prayer and lighting candles went together based - at least in part - on these verses from Revelation, chapters 5 and 8:

When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints...

Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer; and much incense was given to him, so that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel’s hand.

Lighting a candle is a form of prayer, a good candle can burn continuously for days, but you cannot possibly keep praying for days, so the candle keeps praying even when you cannot. Plus, the expense of the candle and the burning of it constitutes a small sacrifice, because once the candle burns, it is gone forever.
