Post subject:  What must I do now?

I am 85 years old and still happily married after 57 years. I have been thinking a great deal about all these years, especially my sins of omission.

“As often as you did these things to the very least of my brothers and sisters you did them to Me.”

Have I done enough for others and, if I haven’t, what must I do now?

Then I remember the story of Mary and Martha. Also many of the saints lived in cloisters, in isolation. How did they ‘love thy neighbour?’ What did they do for others? Just pray? St Teresa of Lisieux comes to mind. Thomas Merton too lived in a cloister a large part of his life. Yet we also have Mother Teresa who worked tirelessly among the poor.
So what am I supposed to do now? Is it too late?

Thomas Merton's Prayer
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
And the fact that I think that I am following your will
Does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this
You will lead me by the right road
Though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust you always.
Though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
And you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

You are a living witness through your years of marriage.

Your salvation has always been dependent upon God anyhow. If you feel as if you have nothing to offer Him, offer Him your nothingness. That worked well for St. Thérèse.

Many thanks for the replies. Meanwhile I have decided to act like Mary. I now do 'Centering' twice daily and hope and trust the Holy Spirit will guide me.

Centering, as in getting your bearings and leveling things out or centering as in "centering prayer"? A good article by Dan Burke on the latter http://rcspiritualdirection.com/blog/20 ... e-redeemed

The 2 best centering prayers I know are the rosary, and the Jesus Prayer:

Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God
Have mercy on me, a sinner.

That prayer did more to help me focus on God throughout the day, even while doing other tasks, than anything else before or since.

My apologies. I meant Centering Prayer. (Thomas Keating, Basil Pennington et al)
