The article says "for retirees," but the fact that I'll never be able to afford retirement doesn't stop me from dreaming...

Anybody got a '63 Avanti they're not using? :cloud9:

I don't...sorry. The Avanti was originally conceived by Studebaker.

I will be retireing in 2017 - God willing - and will look into buying an old MGB or MG M!dget. They are not that expensive to buy but you had better be rich if you can't fix them yourself. They break often...

Console yourself: your Avanti should be much more reliable than an old English car...

When I lived in Florida, I had a neighbor who restored cars from his home for a living--he had a corner lot adjoining the major 4-lane road, so all he had to do when he completed a project was park it in his yard facing the intersection--it'd be gone within a week.

I always loved driving past his house to see how his current project was going. He'd often start with nothing but a chassis. Twice (!) he restored an Avanti. I remember checking the asking price on one of them--in the neighborhood of $30K. I have no doubt that he got it.

A few years back I was walking through the shopping mall where they have their weekly classic car
lineup, usually accompanied by someone playing old rock and roll cassettes from the 50's.

I almost walked past a 64 stingray in stock condition. It had a 283 in it, and the seat had a few tares.
He was asking 11000 for it and i almost flipped at the price, head reeling to come up what financial
hog bin I could get the money out of, beg borrow or st.... Then my wife gave me that familiar "forget
about it lets go" nudge.

It made my day though, but I always regret the missed deal.

Can't figure why when they do a frame off resto to bring the car back to stock, they always think
everyone wants chrome racing rims. To me stock is stock. Ok, so there aren't anymore bias belted
tires, but the rims, caps and white walls I definitely want to see back on the cars.

You figure. :)

Had a professor with an Avanti in college. Looked EXACTLY like the photos in the article here.
My dad owned all kinds of cars when I was a kid. The car in the image linked below sat in un-restored condition in our shop most of my life:

You can buy it from the man who restored it for $95,000. You can see the restoration process here:

Another nice classic would be the Jensen Interceptor. Expensive when new but they must be reasonably priced now. The engine/transmission is American so it will not be breaking down every other day.

I saw a nice red Sunbeam Alpine today. I did some research on Google and a good Sunbeam is about $50,000, give or take ten grand.

D'ya think my wife would say ''yeah, Honey! buy one!'' ...?

Oh, man! Rocky, who was a senior in HS when I was a freshman, drove a red Sunbeam. He was tall, thin, blond, better-looking than most and had a great sense of humor. Having the red convertible in his possession was superfluous.

For those of you unfamiliar with the sublime beauty of the Sunbeam, the first 10 seconds feature one that looked just like Rocky's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWEvp217Tzw
