I have been trying to walk 10,000 steps a day for the last three months.
My knees don't like this. I'm not the only 75 year old who is having this problem.
Being 40 lbs over weight doesn't help.
In April I weighed in at 195 lbs I am now 183 lbs. I'd like to get down to 160 lbs.
Is my diet healthy. NO. I have been eating double cheeseburgers and fries a few times a week.
I try to keep calories under 1000.
I also love potato chips. My doctor has a fit when he hears I have been eating all this bad food;
but I'm still walking four miles per day.
I complain that my weight loss is slow. I suppose if I gave up MCD, I would loose weight a lot faster.
Getting back to my knees: They hurt going down stairs, but not going up stairs.
Being old is no fun.

Maratom,

My aging knees improved greatly, and I attribute it to eating two small handfuls of walnuts daily.

In the past I have had two cortisone shoots in my right knee over a period of eight years. I haven't had any more shots for several years now. I do not use a cane, but I do not kneel at church, but just sit at the edge of my seat instead.

I am 79 now, and get a lot of health tips from articles and slide shows at Web MD. Great motivators! Right now the only medication I take is one baby aspirin before going to bed.
That site can be very helpful with regard to good eating.

Being five feet tall and weighing 107 pounds consistently helps me feel best.

The food market is where I can check my weight and blood pressure!

Here is the section about diet and fitness:

I'm younger than you but in the same boat. I got down to 270 easily but have been stuck there for several weeks. And my knees and feet hurt some, though less since I went to the local running store and got them to fit me for good shoes.

"Being old is no fun."

Being old is "fade-out" time. We need to have a sense of humor about it! (gentle reminder from the Lord that this is not our permanent home.)

we had our 45th high school reunion this weekend... i did not attend but have seen some pictures... i am amazed that some of our alumni have changed so little in that period of time ... i wish i were one of them :( i know my health would be much better if that were the case :fyi:

I am 86. Yes my knees hurt sometimes and I have had a hip replacement. My wife and I still walk about three km daily. We live in beautiful surroundings in a gated community and that helps.

The best advice I got from the internet for losing some weight at my age:- "Go hungry'.

Eat lots of vegetables. They have few calories so you don't have to be as hungry. It took time, but I retrained my appetite for smaller meals. It keeps away the supper binge.

What about weight lifting? My uncle is 70 and still works out. Of course he started long ago. Lifting weights is great for health and fat loss.

My left knee hurts at night, mostly because it is cold. I wear a brace if it hurts to keep it warm and have found that doing some lunges makes it stop.
