I had just learned today that Mark Twain wrote a book on St Joan of Arc.
After Mass a couple told me about this... along with a tale that stretched my credulity to its breaking point. They said how Twain lectured a young boy who said that he loved Swayer and Finn and finished by saying that his book of St Joan of Arc was his best.

It didn't take long to find support for these claims... but it still blows my mind.

Has anyone read the book?
I see it was written close to his death.... was Twain just taken with her holiness or was his a faith that was starting to grow?

A very good book.

No, he didn't acquire faith, as he aged.

Have you ever seen A Man For All Seasons? (I am sure GKC has.) It was also written by a non-believer.

One of my daughter's favorite movies. As history, as John Guy pointed out in a book on More, it is a little problematic, but it is a stunning thing.

Shortly after Twain brought out JOAN, he was working on what, many years later, were finally published as LETTERS FROM THE EARTH. It was an accurate representation of the state of his mind on the subject, in the last 12+ years of his life. A time when many personal problems and tragedies were fueling his cynicism.

Best college lit course I took was one on Twain and 19th century American humor. Or, basically, Twain. Read about a dozen of his books.
