Mote is so much better than any of Pournelle's solo works (the ones I've read, anyway -- not to detract from any of them) that I hesitate to call it a "Pournelle book with Niven overtones". Then again, it's also better than any of Niven's books and any of Pournelle's other collaborations with Niven.

A little like Lennon and McCartney maybe in that their solo work, while most of it is good and some of it is quite excellent even the best of it doesn't hold a candle to what they made when they were collaborating?

I hesitate to make that analogy because (a) there's not one single Lennon & McCartney collaboration (that I can think of) that is head and shoulders above all their other collaborations and (b) some of Niven and Pournelle's solo works are better than some of their collaborations. For example, King David's Spaceship (Pournelle) and Protector (Niven) are better than Footfall or Fallen Angels.

Why, yes. Yes they are.

All I like in FOOTFALL are the inferior aliens. I like inferior aliens.

Footfall is a 50% rewrite of Lucifer's Hammer.

Without the elephants.

I'm not a fan of LUCIFER'S HAMMER

Like FALLEN ANGELS.

I liked Hammer better than Footfall.

I like winning.

Averse to most post-apocalyptic SF.

I think Footfall would have been good if it hadn't been preceded by Lucifer's Hammer.

Also Footfall really, really needed an epilogue.

That's pretty much my take as well.
