I'm not quite sure what to read at the moment of a not specifically devotional nature.

I have started on the first volume of a big, and as yet unfinished, biographical work on King Haakon VII of Norway (and his wife Maud for the duration of her lifetime — she died before the second world war and long before he did). He's not born yet, but I guess the grandparent and parent generations are laying all the foundations for the marrying of first cousins and first cousins once removed and whatnot. Foreigners!

But, while it is very well written and easy and engaging to read and I do need to read something written in decent and recent Norwegian like this, I need a novel too!

I just read the Grapes of Wrath for the first time. It was pretty good.

It is not written in Norwegian. :fyi:

It is not very Dickensian. :fyi:

I also just reread Brave New World. It was OK.

I just read Frankenstein. It was pretty good.

Hm....I just reread the Space Trilogy. It was pretty good. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, especially That Hideous Strength, which I remembered as being pretty great and by far my favorite of the three. I'm not sure it's my favorite of the three any more...maybe Perelandra. But on the whole I'd say the trilogy was just pretty darn good, not great.

That's all I can remember from the very recent past............but of course it's always a good idea to read anything by Flannery O'Connor or Evelyn Waugh or Dickens. :fyi:

Sure, hasn't everybody read that in school?

I started a wee book called Brother Petroc's return. But I thought it would be a Catholic book and now, because of something I came across, I think it may get all weird and possibly unsound. Does anyone know it? I hope it's sound.

ETA: My concerns were entirely unfounded. It's very Catholic and a great wee book!

It's written by a Dominican. What could be wrong with it?

My wife is revisiting the trilogy.

Two down, one to go.

Enjoying them very much. My wife has good taste.

Actually, I think the wee thing I saw somewhere online got it a bit wrong, or else I misread it in passing.

My concerns regarding Brother Petroc's Return were completely unfounded!!! I thought it was a great book. And very Catholic. I found it to some extent spiritually helpful as well, at least potentially so.

Of course, I can't vouch for accuracy of the author's description and analysis of different spiritualities, orders, and times.

I'll be looking out for more by the same author.

Banned for attempting to summon gherkin.

Wait, what? Summoned? For what? I dunno anything about Petroc and his heretical Dominican henchmen.

The least you can do when summoned is read the posts. And Brother Petroc's Return!
